How effective is Old Majors speech Animal Farm Essay

How effective is Old Major’s speech in chapter one? In Chapter one, Old Major gives a speech about how the animals should rebel against Mr Jones, the human and leader of the farm in order to please all of the animals by having satisfactory amounts of the essentials. This rebellion would lead into Animalism. Animalism represents communism and how all animals should be equal. Old Major symbolizes Lenin. Lenin was a revolutionary thinker who came up with the basic concept of the Russian Revolution. During Old Major’s speech, a wide variety of persuasive techniques are used and this is very noticeable. He creates a number of ideas that he discusses to the animals to persuade them that the rebellion is right. For example in his opening sentence he says â€Å"Comrades, you have heard...† By referring the animals as comrades, it brings the feeling of friendliness and makes his views more personal. Also it suggests that Old Major views and treats all of the animals as equal. Also in the speech, Old Major directly speaks to certain animals at times by using pronouns such as â€Å"You† and â€Å"Your†. For example he uses the pronoun â€Å"your† in the sentence â€Å"Fix your eyes on that, comrades, throughout the short remainder of you lives†. Through using pronouns, the speech is more personal and directly aimed at the animals so they would listen and engage more. Furthermore, in the speech, repetition is used by repeating the main points of his speech. For example â€Å"No animal in England knows the meaning of happiness...† is said and them shortly after he repeats â€Å"No animal in England is free†. Answer: Self Reflection One of the remarkable criteria of an effective work culture is the type and category of leadership practices that are prevalent in the organization. It is one of the mandatory profile characteristics of the leader or the manager who possess the role of leading or managing the relative aspects of the organization. Leadership can be defined as a process which is realized through a behavioral trait that is a mandatory quality that measures the effectiveness and the capabilities of the leader or the manager. The efficacy of role and responsibility of the manager is determined through the application and management of the various aspect of this feature. There are a number of segments and procedures which helps in analyzing the required leadership capabilities that are observed in an individual. Among the number of participants there were a number of questionnaire that was formulated and passed on which was based on the reflections and revelations of the number of theories of leadership st yle. The leadership theories on which the diagnosis was carried out have been predominantly used for the techniques responsible for the individual analysis. The inference which was drawn from the stages of mini simulation has been necessarily coordinated and I have been able to derive a number of instances that has helped in realizing my ability to empower and influence my leadership style. In regards to the Quinn Management Questionnaire which is based on rating the constituents of leadership where the essential practices and applications of skills of power and influence has been evaluated through the determinants of the test. Owing to the criteria of commanding and influencing my authority over the others I have been a pretty successful leader. I was appointed as the leader of maintaining the cultural aspect of an annual meet of an educational institution. The fact that I had to not only manage or arrange but also supervise all the activities, style and the best fit approaches for executing al the aspect of the program allowed to use my power of assigning different task and encouraging the participations of the team members. There were three groups assigned under my managerial power and application which has helped me to comprehend the best criteria required for managing three groups. The cultural activity involved contacting, arranging, ensuring the participation and attendance of three famous personalities, which was assigned to two teams which had two members each. In fact there have been instances where I had to influence my team members in successfully getting their task done in spite of many obstacles and had to exercise my power when they did not show sincerity towards their assigned work. One of the incredible criterions of a successful work culture is the nature and class of leadership practices and during this event I have been able to observe a number of sequences that regulated the multitude of activities among my group members. One more role of me as a responsible influencer developed my competence was due to my representation of an anti-discrimination movement which was carried out in our institutions. Armed with an objective of the equal value and integrity it raised concern among the peer people and the initiative of managing has been practiced in this scenario. Moreover, while leading a group of 10 people under the online and offline marketing team I have developed an acute sense of influencing towards the better performance and more productivity towards the noble initiative everyone in the group was involved with a survey which are prevalent in the behavioral structure. The devise of management which is employed to supervise and critically analyze the variety of role that is expected of a manager have been defined extensively in this assessment (Refer Fig.7.) . The assessment has also allowed me to carry out a self analysis on my capabilities as an able leader. Undoubtedly, leadership skills are a number of factors which contribute to the best of the required scenario. The factors include the competencies and abilities of appropriate credibility, the significance of power and influence along with the humanistic motive of self confidence are some of the digressions which are to be analyzed in order to make pragmatic judgment. However, this unit focuses particularly on the ability of influence and power to the correlation with the varying dynamics of leadership and its ranging styles. A questionnaire was involved for assessing all the properties that will aid in comprehending my nature of power and influence. The comparison and contrast between the three diagnostic tests have revealed that I am capable in understanding the emotional intelligence, priorities and my role in asserting both the power of leadership and facilitating the process of motivation among my teammates for improving the type of work and the culture, which is sustained in the following assessment. The measurement tools have helped me to access the importance to analyze and draw inference from the situations and implications that are required for the development of my personality. The relevancy of power and influence in an organizational structure is as crucial in an appropriate leadership framework, which is necessarily a huge determinant while analyzing, and carrying out a self-diagnosis. Among the participants of this workshop there were a number of tools which have marked or analyzed my competence in ascending order staring form lower rate of 1 to a higher rate of 3 (Refer Fig.9). Literature Review The concept of leadership is an age-old phenomenon. The administrative aspect and nature of the organization depends upon the leadership qualities. It is used as a determinant and a qualifying factor that helps in comprehending the influential and relative capable powers of the leader. A leader or manager is supposed to lead a team towards fulfilling or accomplishing a common objective. The leader of a group must possess the cognition and the control of influencing and motivating the group members for improving their productivity and the determination towards their role (Pierro et al., 2013). The approach of organizational behavior has helped in the coordination of the power and influence which is one of the integral powers of the authority or the body of management. The mechanism of power and influence is important to understand the call of organizational authority and the influence, which has been defined by the theories, which has been determined by the several categories of power . According to Cameron et al., (2014) the factors that coordinate the environment of this behavior includes the legitimate, coercive, reward, expert, referent and informational which has been acknowledged on the importance of power and influence applied in the various organizational structure (Refer Fig.10.). Influencing is an ability, which motivates, analyzes the situation and helps in improving the strategies that are involved in effective organizational factors. Power on the other hand states the nature of authority, which is important for understanding the variable factors and the interventions of the relationship between the followers and the leader (Pennings et al., 2014). The factors of power and its coordination are the aspects, which helps in determining the nature and the type of authority involved in a specific systems and the various aspects of the leadership styles. The job profile of a leader also expects him/ her to analyze human and environmental situations through the proper utility of the power that has been vested upon them. Accessing the power and imposing on the team member must be performed effectively and strategically so that there are no hindrance in the role and affairs of leadership. In fact, the four elements that are involved in the leadership style involve leader and the respective followers, the process of flow of information and communication practices and the circumstances of the operation. The official representative of a group must be able to mange, acquire and indulge in a number of pro-active activities and roles that are expected to be performed by while presiding as a leader. The skills that are required are congruent with a number of leadership theories that have existed by the virtue of the various research and studies in this discipline of management (Reich Lebow, 2014). The critical and analytical studies have helped in improving the conventional style along with the new discoveries and concepts, which aided in developing new techniques and tools for evaluating the style of leadership followed in an organization. The assessment carried out after conducting the experiential workshop, which was a two long event, has been measured based on power and influence. The self-assessment on the theories, factors and limitations of this competency of a leader shall be executed in this module (Meier, 2016). It addresses the required competence in order to fulfill the key skills and features of the appropriate leadership style. The module helps in coordinating and drawing an informative account on the policies and framework of the different leadership style prevalent in the course of this assessment. Moreover, the involvement of the Competing Value Framework of Quinn, Emotional Intelligence Capability by David Golemaan and Situational Leadership Framework by Hers ey-Blanchard has been a significant tool in deriving a conclusion to this leadership assessment. The Competing Value Framework is a constructive tool in which are based the dimensions of leadership and its nature within a predefined organizational framework which is hypothetical and can be cited by assessing any competing value standards. According to Quinn et al., (2014), effectiveness in an organization, through the quantitative representation of the key performance meter of the organization. It has been classified in four quadrants primarily in order to initiate the framework and the required structure for assessing four models namely, the internal, human systems, open and rational goal model (Refer Fig1.). The leadership qualities have been linked to the relevant situation and the probable roles, which can exist in the specific environment, have been classified in the competitive value leadership framework. It can be described by plotting a graph, which measures the tendencies of occurrence of the different roles of a leader in a structural set up of the organizational framework. The roles entail eight categories ranging from the role of a mentor, innovator, monitor, director, facilitator, producer, co-coordinator and broker (Refer Fig. 2). The assimilation of these roles defines the importance and variety of the behavioral intentions and adaptations, which can be accessed by any leader or a manager. The competence of a leader with a powerful attitude of a great influencer cannot be limited to any specific role, but proper mentoring and monitoring of the team members or the apparent followers are important characteristics that can be used for operating them in a real environment. The regulatory agents are the level of flexibility and control which measures the requirement and the style that is required for the management of the competing values framework (Refer Fig.8). As opined by the Magee Frasier, (2014), culture is an inherent part of determining o evaluating the effectiveness that can be employed by aligning all the notions that have been referred while formulating the theory developed by Quinn which will result in an effective outcome. In fact advocating the means of this framework has helped in assessing the significance and the nature of the roles that involves power and influence to be integrated within the systems of organizational practices. The next diagnostic action involves the concept of Emotional Intelligence Capability, which is a mixture of a cognitive and radical involvement with the activities of a leader while leading a group of people. In fact, Daniel Golemaan in his theory has deciphered the notions of capabilities, which are dependent on both the emotional as well as the intelligence quotient. He asserted the fact that being a strategic and controlled leader is not the limits of attaining effectiveness rather the fact that the leader must possess equal human quality as compassion and comprehending ability. This theory is of prime importance due to the involvement of human resource in an organizational framework who is emotional bearers. As stated by Gardner Salovey, (2013), leader is supposed to have capabilities who is likely to understand and relate to the emotions and the reasons of effectiveness or natural tendencies. Goleman has developed the criterions into four models or medium, which is subjected to being flexible and apply it while incorporating into the leadership strategies of an individual (Refer Fig.6). The interpersonal account of embracing and accepting a range of emotions and displaying it with the right amount of emotional balance and recognition capacities are involved in the analysis of the ESIC theory (Goleman Boyatzis, McKee, 2013). The four strata can be defined as the self-awareness or consciousness along with self-management on the other hand it entails the social awareness and skill, which must be managed by the acquired status of a leader. Therefore, the immense involvement of the discipline, which involves aligning both, the emotional acquaintance of the individual as well as the peer team members have been mentioned within this emotional intelligence assessment. Capacities to self reflect and identify the best of the requirements and judging a situation, which should have a holistic impact on all the employees in consideration with the performance meter have been involved in this study of the emotional intelligence of a leader. It also looks into managing and interpreting the relationship between the coordination of the team members and understanding the work-life balance. The four elements involve the style of delegating, telling, participating and selling along with the maintenance and integration of work culture and interaction procedure (Refer Fig. 5.). Moreover, this structure is dependent on the variation of the situations and the leader must adapt according to the suitable and appropriate style and nature of acceptance and correlation (Beveridge, 2013).The flow of directions and the analysis will be involved within the criteria and the involvement of the four modules and the situation, which can occur in any organizational culture. The power of maturity, competency and willingness determines the success and philosophy of the situational leadership framework. The fact that commitment and the tendency to perform the role of a leader effectively have been coordinated within a graphical plot, which have been analyzed through the nature of the balance between all the determinants (Refer Fig. 4). The contextual factors that are involved within the situational leadership model involve the hierarchies and the levels of developing and interpreting the best goals and objectives of the organization and the leader. Overall all the interpreta tions of the three important elements of judging the leadership style has helped in assessing and understanding the leadership style and the type of leadership practices which has enabled in regulating the practices and the necessary theories of the type of organizational leadership and governance. Conclusion The fact and the importance of the various scenarios which have been developed due to the various leadership theories have been asserted in this discussion. It began with a self reflection procedure which has been streamlined in determining my capacities in managing and coordinating my leadership skills. The self account drew a lead to discussing all the contextual factors that are involved in managing and supervising my scope and capacities of leading and governing a coordinated and effectual team members. The competence of a leader with a powerful attitude of a great influencer cannot be limited to any specific role, but proper mentoring and monitoring of the team members or the apparent followers are important characteristics that can be used for operating them in a real environment. Ethos, logos, pathos free essay sample

In my opinion this is an anti-Nike ad, it is portraying Nike as a bad company. This ad is in black and white with some words colored in red. Looking at this ad I see a young girl running with no shoes on her feet and holding a blanket. I think there is a baby in that blanket by the way she is cradling it in her arms. The emotion in this ad is depressing due to its gray color and the young girl running with no shoes on her feet holding her baby. It makes you stop to read the ad about this young girl holding her baby wrapped in a blanket with a blank stare on her face. This causes you think how the people making the Nike products are being treated. This young girl is portrayed as over worked and exhausted, her feet are swollen, bruised and, it looks as if she is running from someone. She is standing on a ledge as if in a state of desperation. Finally, this ad used its words to get consumers to think how Nike exploits their workers through the use of logos. The pressure they put on Indonesian workers working 60 hours a week is unfair. It is disturbing that workers are being scared to ask for a raise after they produce a good product. Because after they ask for a raise they will disappear. If this ad is against Nike, why would they put â€Å"SO THINK IT’S SO COOL TO WEAR NIKE† in big bold red letters? People walking past this ad will just see the last phrase its cool to wear Nike. I my opinion it is because they want to get Nike customers to stop and read the ad. To get their customers to think how the products they love and support is being made. As a result, when you see an ad like this it makes you wonder how little employees are compensated for their hard work. Nike is such a popular brand. Philomela by Matthew Arnold free essay sample

This poem is a mythological history of love and treason, a history that show the poet’s dramatic loneliness and alienation from the real world. The poetic voice speaks to an external self, comparing his passion and his pain with the eternal passions and pains of the world, always the same, represented by the myth of Philomela. It is then a clear declaration of what is poetry for the author, and by the use of mythological images he achieves an universal meaning through space and time. The second question of this stanza recalls the reader where the poet is, a topological point of view that change the time and space setting: from Greece to England, from myth to reality. Now, Philomela, in the shape of a nightingale is here, with the poet, can the idyllic place be a â€Å"balm† for her sorrow? Third Stanza In the third stanza the poetic voice begins with one of the three interrogatives that will give the educated reader the whole scene of the mythological story the speaker is referencing to. It is the myth of Philomela and Procne, betrayed by Tereus. The zoomorphic personification reveals the identity of Philomela, now a nightingale, singing on the cedar tree, whose singing the poet can hear, getting from it a fresh inspiration for poetry. From line 16 to line 27, each question is an episode of the myth, the poetic voice asks for facts he already knows, recalling the events to increase the pathos in an hyperbole of emotion. Thus it can be inferred that Eugene is the muse of the poet, the poetic inspiration that is in himself, the old and new world that, inside him and in the same time, drives him to â€Å"Eternal passion! † and to â€Å"Eternal pain! †. Nutrition is an important issue in my life for many reasons. The most important being my major, dental hygiene. I’ve taken a couple nutrition courses already. I also simply care for the fact that what we eat is associated with our health and how long we may live. Before I went to the website I didn’t expect to see many healthy benefits to eating McDonalds so I guess I was prepared. It said that McDonald’s food is linked to serious diseases because of the high fat and low fiber content. I know from my nutrition classes in the past that a low fiber diet is linked obesity, diabetes, arteriosclerosis, colon cancer, and many more things. I find it amusing that they can say that their food can be a valuable part of a balanced diet. I don’t think that they should be allowed to promote that in any way.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  On the website I found a part on evidence talking about how McDonald’s is not being truthful to it’s customers. They lied about what goes into their Chicken McNuggets. They claimed that it was just chicken breast and thigh meat but it is actually chicken meat mixed with chicken skin and cooked in high-beef lard, which is absorbed into it. They also lied about being the first fast food chain to voluntarily give out the ingredients in their food. They didn’t do it voluntarily they were made to but not without a fight of course. So the question is why is McDonald’s trying to deceive their customers? I went to McDonald’s healthy eating policy on the website... Our limited knowledge of the environment has always urged for new things to be discovered. The desire to understand the world better has made people search for rational answers, for principles and laws. For centuries people have tried to unlock the mysterious world that surrounds them. Because myths did not explain things well enough the Greeks began to ask questions about the world around them. They did this so thoroughly and so brilliantly that the era between 600 and 400 B.C. is called the golden age of philosophy. The Greek philosophy was an attempt to find the truth about unexplained phenomena, mostly by trying to think things through, not by running experiments in a laboratory. The philosophers wanted to discover the basic nature of things and some of them believed that they could find one thing that everything else was made of. A philosopher named Thales said that this substance was water, but another named Anaximenes thought it was air. A third called Empedocles said that the world was composed of four elements: earth, air fire and water. Aristotle became the most influential of the Greek philosophers, and his ideas dominated science for nearly two millennia after his death in 323 BC. He believed that four qualities were found in nature: heat, cold, moisture, and dryness. The four elements were each composed of pairs of these qualities; for example, fire was hot and dry, water was cold and moist, air was hot and moist, and earth was cold and dry. These elements with their qualities combined in various proportions to form the components of the earthly planet. Because it was possible for the amounts of each quality in an element to be changed, the elements could be changed into one another; thus, it was thought possible also to change the material substances that were built up from the elements-lead into gold, fo...

Human nature - Essay Example I take the position that cruelty is a unique human trait since, as its definition suggests, it involves deliberate infliction of pain and suffering on others and deriving pleasure from it. Empirically, human beings have a unique ability to attribute suffering or pain to other creatures. This was not the case with the subjects in the Milgram’s experiment; in fact Stanley Milgram in one of his quotes declared that how a man acts is much more determined by the situation he finds himself in and not much in his nature or the kind of a person he is. The subjects in the experiment acted as they did; they were willing to deliver to deliver the maximum shock, which they did. Despite the fact that they did deliver the maximum shock, they were, however, angry, distraught, and agitated at the experimenter. They delivered the maximum shock anyway because they were following order, which they did to the end. This shows that the subjects acted as they did; they performed seemingly sadistic a nd overly cruel acts; not because it was their nature-who they were-, but because they were obey the instruction of the authority. Similarly, in Kitty Genovese case, none of the 38 witnessed helped Kitty Genovese despite his numerous cry for help, not because they did not want to help her or because they were cruel, but because of the situation that they found themselves in (Gansberg). This is explained by the experiment carried out by John Darley and Bibb Latane, who sought to explain the behavior of the 38 people who witnessed the brutality and murder of Kitty Genovese. Darley and Latane argued that the 38 witnesses behaved the way they did because of the effect referred to as diffusion of responsibility. Diffusion of responsibility states that no one is willing to help because they are all thinking that someone else will help. Darley and Latane found out that the more the witnessed were, the more helping behavior decreased; the less every person felt that it was their responsibil ity to help (Slater 112). This thus disputes the notion that no one helped Kitty Genovese because cruelty is part of human nature, and the 38 witnesses were cruel. Cruelty in itself is subjective; what others may consider cruel, other people may consider not cruel but a more logical choice. As its definition suggests, cruelty is a feeling that cannot be defined without being idiosyncratic. This is because the range of human feeling greatly differs; others may be insensitive while others may be sensitive. Despite cruelty being considered part of human nature, the logic is somewhat flawed since it is tied to human emotions, while it is to some extent objective. Cruelty is not unnatural, either; this is because, more often than not human beings are cruel to other people that they do not like or they loathe. Plato was, from the beginning concerned with the relationship between what is eternal and immutable, and what is more transient and 'flows' in nature. This was a preoccupation of both Socrates as well as the pre-Socratic sophists, who were more concerned with human morality and the societal ideals or 'virtues'. While the sophists, like today's postmodernists held that ideas of right and wrong varied from state to state and were equally valid, this was not accepted by Socrates. He believed that there were absolute rules for right and wrong. He believed in eternal, immutable laws because human reason was eternal and immutable. Plato is concerned not only with what is eternal and immutable as regards morals (right and wrong) in society, but also what is eternal and immutable in nature. For Plato, there was no dichotomy as the two problems were the same. The reality he tried to grasp behind the appearances was what was eternally, 'true', beautiful' and 'good'. Before Plato arrived on the scene, Empedocles and Democritus had drawn attention to the fact that, although in nature everything appears to be transient, there must be 'something' underlying this flow that never changes. Plato agreed with the view that everything 'flows' and that there are no 'substances' that time cannot dissolve and erode, but that what is permanent is in the idea of a timeless 'form' which is eternal and immutable. So, for Plato, what was immutable was not anything physical and demonstrable, but a conception of a spiritual and abstract pattern that underpin all tangible things in the world. For example, while individual, physical horses may differ in several dimensions, there is an unchanging model of what a horse is or should be and each individual horse conforms to it. Plato decided that there were a limited number of forms giving rise to all the varied forms we experience around us. Plato called these forms ideas. Plato concluded that there was a greater reality behind the observable, material world and that this reality resolved itself into the world of ideas. These are the eternal and immutable patterns behind all observable phenomena and were the basis for Plato's theory of ideas. Plato observed that nothing that is perceived by the senses could last forever. Plato therefore, expounded the view that we could not have true knowledge of things that are in a constant flux and are changing. We can have true knowledge of things that are understood by the use of our faculty for reasoning while we can only have opinions about what we perceive through our senses. He illustrated his belief that all natural phenomena are merely shadows of their true forms and ideas by utilizing the 'myth of the cave'. He likened normal people to those living in an underground cave sitting with their backs to the mouth of the cave and unable to move or look around. Formed in 1995, the goal of the group is to create awareness and factual understanding of the casino world. The main purpose of the group is to educate the public and its stakeholders about casinos. In the process, it also benefits its members by giving support to them in terms of legislations that affect them and the industry, rules and regulations that they need to be familiar about, and several other assistance while operating their respective enterprises. The AGA also acted as a trusted source of information for media personnel and other industry partners. (About the AGA, 2003, n. p. ) As part of its advocacy, the AGA also highlights responsible gaming as an important element in enjoying casinos. It partners with schools and encourages its members and employees to create awareness on responsible gaming, and identifies the results of irresponsibility within casinos. The AGA started the orange wristband campaign under the â€Å"Keep It Fun† slogan, encouraging gamers to keep casino playing fun and never destructive. Poker machines have been traditional entertainment tools. Since the creation of the first poker machine in the late 1800s, it has become widely identified with bars and liquor shops. (Poker machines history, n. d. , n. p. The availability of poker machines in public places has raised concerns that it might affect family structure. Coleman (1999, n. p. ) reports that in Australia efforts have been made to study the link between family issues and gambling. Poker machines have been pointed out to be the major culprit among all gambling devices. The same issues are present. Noting that poker machines are readily available to all and that getting addicted to it is not impossible, and with an existing statistics of gamblers whose family life has been put at stake because of their addiction to the game, an inquiry has been made on how the issue can be resolved. The first option for many would be to restrain the availability of poker machines. At the most, the machines can even be totally banned. While this is an efficient way to address the issue, there are many considerations that may affect this. Casinos around the world employ thousands of workers, and a deep cut in their revenues may mean an unforeseen increase in unemployment. Also, poker machines and other gambling entertainments remit big tax revenues. In New Orleans, for instance, video poker machines accounted over $200 million in taxes. With such a price tag at stake, it is difficult for the local governments to surrender into banning poker machines. The dilemma crosses other continents. Poker machines are big hits across Asia too. Thus, poker machines are often blamed to many social problems. (Man vs. Machine, 2008, n. p. ) However, coinciding with this is the fact that poker machine players often have to deal with other problems, as a study of 43,000 Americans have found. It is therefore concluded that making the game unavailable to gamblers with interrelated problems will not solve their addiction. The same is true with thousand of other gamblers around the world. (Man vs. Machine, 2008, n. p. ) Gambling and the Family Considering that a big percentage of 43,000 poker-machine playing Americans who underwent the study have other behavioral problems while addicted to the game, it cannot be disclosed that the family problems are caused by playing poker machines. There is the possibility that poker is their way of escaping from the other stresses in their lives. It can also be said that poker is their way of solving their problem—a player whose family is undergoing financial turmoil may think that poker may give him the luck he has been waiting for to ease his family of financial burdens. (Man vs. Machine, 2008, n. p. ) However, it is acceptable to say that there are many players who have become addicted to the game, and at which point became disconnected with their families, begun failing to judge their finances properly, and miscalculated many personal and financial decisions for the sake of playing. The actual percentages of players who belong to these groups are difficult to tell. Yet, in crediting the existence of these two facets, it is easier to recognize the proper solutions to be carried out by the government. Individual choices Before any legislation, legislators must closely study the profile of poker machine players. In Australia, 62. % of casino players gamble in poker machines. This is a majority of all other casino games and gambling devices. Of these poker machine players, 98% play mainly in casinos and betting clubs. 85. 4% knows that playing the poker machine is a game of chance. Still, 73. 4% can play the machine for up to an hour. (Hing and Breen, 2002, 192) Here, the behavior of players can be seen. It also shows that the wide availability of poker machines elsewhere does little to affect the betting behavior of players, as majority plays mainly on betting clubs. It can be alarming, though, that gamers can sit and bet in the machine for up to an hour. Thus, this requires a close look. Gamers also have different reasons for playing. For the majority, playing the poker machine is purely to entertain themselves. It was a way to let time pass. A small percentage of the respondents (21. 4%) played for hopes to win. (Hing and Breen, 2002, 192) This dispels the second facet presented herein, where it has been theorized that some players play poker machines for money. It can be associated that because majority of the players see poker machines as a game of luck, there is no certainty of winning or gaining money with it. In a personal level, respondents who play poker machines have been found to be between 18 and 34 years old. They are singles in the sense that they have never married. Thus, they may have relationships. Majority of them do not have dependents. (Hing and Breen, 2002, 192) This questions the validity of the argument that poker machines break families. With a majority of players without families or living under circumstances of broken families already, it is notable to discuss that poker machines may not be causing the family problems to begin with. The other issues besetting the players should likely be causing the complications, and thus should be addressed as well. Proposed Implementations The Australian study is a comprehensive view of the profiles of poker machine gamers. However, it is difficult to pattern implementations in other counties with this single study. A rigorous study for each country or state is needed, for which solutions should be patterned. On the other hand, given that these findings are also true elsewhere, the AGA proposes the following strategies for implementation. With these, it is expected that the Federal Government will be able to find ways to decrease or eliminate the claimed probable causes of poker machines as destructive agents to families. Bet and Time limit Hills (n. d. , n. p. ) assert that a player can bet up to $2 per spin and play up to 200 spins per hour. Finding that majority of poker gamers can sit and bet for up to an hour, it is recommended that time restriction be implemented. A player can bet on a machine for up to the approved maximum time only. This ensures that the player will not be too absorbed in the game and will remain conscious about his betting behavior and betting practices. Coinciding with this, there should also be a limit on the bets that one can play in a specific set. If the maximum bet for the day has been reached, the player should stop even if the game is less than the maximum allowed. Support for Gaming Advocacies Currently, the American Gaming Association has education drives to combat gaming addiction. While the program has been successful in places where it has been introduced, the group needs the additional mileage that the Federal Government can provide. The support will also mean more people knowing about the campaign and educated about the ill effects of addictive gambling. It covers both prevention of gaming addiction and cure. Conclusion Many studies have associated gambling with breakage in family ties. With majority of gamblers playing poker machines, the device has become a point of contention. The local government, however, cannot decide on the proper move considering that a bog percentage of community revenues come from the machines.
